Women have breast augmentations and breast reductions for a variety of reasons.
Poor surgical technique and inexperienced surgeons can lead to complications and poor results.

Know Your Doctor Before Plastic Surgery:
A trend we have seen over the last 10 years, is a number of non-qualified doctors are now attempting to perform plastic and cosmetic surgery even though they have little or no training in these areas.
If you are thinking about plastic or cosmetic surgery, be very careful about doctors calling themselves 'cosmetic surgeons'. This title is different than the title of 'plastic surgeon'. To be a plastic surgeon typically requires a five year residency in plastic surgery. Many doctors will now tell patients they are cosmetic surgeons, to the ignorance of the patient.
Surprisingly, doctors do not need to be 'plastic surgeons' to perform breast augmentations, liposuction, tummy tucks, nose jobs, face lifts or eye lid surgery. Instead, certain doctors, strictly for pecuniary gain are attending weekend seminars where they receive certificates of attendance and use these weekend seminars as basis to show patients they are qualified.
We have had cases against dermatologists and
OB/GYN who were not competent to perform plastic surgery and who had horrific results for their patients.
A weekend seminar does not qualify a physician to attempt plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery, and greatly increases the chance of complications, infection, bleeding, permanent scarring and even death.
Several years ago, we settled a case against a Dermatologist for 1.25 Million Dollars after he convinced a young lady he was competent to perform a mastopexy (breast reduction).
Basically, he botched the breast reduction so badly, that her breasts were unrecognizable after wards. This doctor had no requisite training, experience, or education in plastic surgery, but yet he held himself out as a 'cosmetic surgeon'. Patients should be very careful of that term.
Also, patients should be careful about a physician who claims he is board certified in 'cosmetic surgery' or by the 'Board of Cosmetic Surgery'. Many non-accredited organizations are forming Societies using the term "Board of Cosmetic Surgery" to gain patients' trust. Many of these non-accredited organizations require only a valid physician license and attendance in a weekend seminar. A weekend course does not qualify a doctor to try plastic surgery. As stated, Plastic Surgeons typically require a five year residency and education training program.

Any women who decides to undergo any plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery, including a breast augmentation, breast reduction, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty (nose job), face lift or eye lid surgery should thoroughly research their physician prior to the surgery being performed.
There are many things you can do to ensure that the surgeon you pick is qualified and competent to perform the procedure chosen:
- Check Board Certification: (Are they a board certified plastic surgeon?)
- Check Accreditation: (Is this an accredited surgery center?)
- Check Hospital Privileges (do hospitals allow this doctor to perform this surgery?)
- Check References: (Ask other doctors about him/her)
- Verify His/Her Experience: (research your physician on-line)
