"Hi I'm Nicole Hauptman, an attorney with Flaherty Fardo. Today is January 12, 2012, and I wanted to provide you with an update on the current status of the 2012 reassessment in Allegheny County. As of today, Judge Wettick issued an order extending the implementation of the 2012 reassessment numbers until 2013. These new assessment values will therefore not impact your taxes until 2013. However, property owners will be given the opportunity to challenge these reassessment values this year. If you own residential or commercial property in the City of Pittsburgh school district, you only have until February 24, 2012 to file an appeal, to challenge this reassessment value before you are required to pay taxes next year."
"I think one of the things that sets our law firm apart is that we are very selective on the cases we accept. The advantage to our clients is that it ensures that we have the time necessary to thoroughly and aggressively pursue their claim. From a personal standpoint, I enjoy reading the medical records, I especially enjoy taking the depositions of the doctors, but I also value that clients are trusting us to make sure that their case is handled correctly. If you have any questions about a medical malpractice case, we do offer free consultations and I would be happy to speak with you. Thank you very much."

"There is a lot of complicated factors that go into valuing a case. But there is a lot of things that people don't initially think of when they are putting a value on a case. You think "I missed some work, I lost some wages, I have some medical bills that I have to pay."

There are really two key factors to determining whether you have a good medical malpractice case. The first is injuries. You have to be injured severally and typically permanently, in a way that changes your life.
I have handled more than 1,000 property assessment cases during my time here and Allegheny County went through a reassessment that went into effect in 2013. So now the base year is January 1, 2012. So a lot of people will call and say "I just bought my property, what is going on?"
Attorney Fardo: We are a civil litigation law firm that focuses on personal injury, medical malpractice, business, and real estate disputes.
The most important thing that a property owner needs to know when they receive an eminent domain action - they will receive what is called a Declaration of Taking, which essentially is a legal pleading that says we are going to take your property.
Almost every law firm offers a free consultation. When you call our law firm you are talking with the attorney that is going to be working on your case. Again, with a team of all of us. And, we don't just give you 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes.
Attorney Hauptman: Choosing an attorney is essentially the most important part of your case, because if you pick an attorney that you do not get along with, or one that is not actually fighting for you, you could have a wonderful case and get nothing out of it.
The law firm started back in the early 1990's with my Dad, who was the former Mayor of Pittsburgh and County Commissioner. And then I had gone to law school with Dwayne Woodruff the Pittsburgh Steeler.
Informed consent is an obligation that the law places upon doctors and physicians before they engage in certain kinds of procedures or treatments. The idea is each individual has the right to make decisions about their own body and a doctor can't operate on me without my consent. But it is not enough to just get me to say, "yes".
Attorney Hauptman: "In terms of a compliment, usually its, "I called you, you took the time to really sit down and understand my needs and really helped me get out of a situation where I felt uncomfortable, I wasn't really familiar with the process. You made me feel good about it, you made me feel comfortable, and you really helped me get the outcome I was looking for."
You help business clients one at a time. And you need to know the client and the client needs to know you. You have to understand what it is they do, how they make money, what they need to do to continue their business operation.

When an injured person passes away, legally speaking there are two different kinds of actions that might be available. One of those is called a survival action. A survival action is really a cause of action that belongs to the estate of the person who dies, and you can recover damages for the injury, for the pain and suffering, for the out of pocket losses, but limited to the time period between the injury and the persons death.
If you are in a car, truck, or bus accident, you need to reach out and contact our firm almost immediately. Today's world is different. Ten or fifteen years ago, you could wait to file a lawsuit. Today it is different - there is technology.
Basically the gist of a contract is the meeting of the minds. It is where you come together on the key terms to agree to do something. We see a little bit of everything to be honest. With a lot of our clients we do a lot of small businesses and they don't have a formal agreement up-front, they just have an oral agreement that we're going to do these services for this amount of money and then they invoice for it.
The Magistrate Courts in Pennsylvania serve a couple different purposes, some of those are fundamentally criminal cases. Whether it is holding preliminary hearings in more serious offenses, or summary hearings for your traffic tickets or public citations, things like that.
If you are involved in a slip and fall accident, you need to move quickly and hire a law firm. Most business premises, in fact, the vast majority of business premises today, have videotape on premises. That videotape can be gone in as little as 30 or 60 days.
It all starts with filing a Writ of Execution. Once you file a Writ then the Sheriff will serve it upon either the Defendant themselves or any garnishees that you add. You can do Discovery in the Aid of Execution, and send the Defendant Interrogatories, Request for Production of Documents asking them "does anyone owe you money?", "where do you bank?"
The first thing that I always do is I try to find out as much as I can about the potential Defendant (the person that owes the money). If it is a business, are they still in business? If they are, why aren't they paying. Sometimes they will tell you. "we just don't have the cash flow right now". Other times they have a dispute about the work done.
Clients often ask whether or not they can recover attorneys fees in a case of civil litigation. Often that answer is unfortunately no. There are really only two circumstances where you are entitled to recover the attorneys fees you spend prosecuting a case. One of those is if you have specific language in the contract that allows you to do it.
